Biblical Purpose of Giving
Giving tithes and offerings are a Biblical concept. What’s the purpose of giving tithes and offerings? Let’s look at three key components.
- It is a way to thank God in a form of worship.
In Genesis 14:18-20, God gave Abram a great victory when his nephew Lot was rescued from captivity. The Bible says, “Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said: ‘Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.’ And he gave him a tithe of all.”
Melchizedek is a type of, a picture of Jesus Christ. We see this parallel found in Hebrews chapters 5-7.
- When you give, you can expect blessings.
The Bible says in the Book of Malachi 3:10-12, “‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. 11 ‘ And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,’ says the LORD of hosts; 12 and all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land,’ says the LORD of hosts.”
God said there will be great blessings for those who give tithes and offerings.
- God’s worker is worthy of their wages.
In the Book of Luke chapter 10 verse 7, Jesus sent out the 70 missionaries to do the work of the Lord. Jesus instructed them saying, “And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages.”
If you are being fed or blessed by someone doing the work of the Lord, they are worthy of their wages. When you give, you are helping that person to continue doing the work of the Lord.
Biblical Manners of Giving
Let’s look at two manners in which the Bible instructs us on how to give.
- God doesn’t look at how much you give, he looks at the condition of your heart.
We see this represented in Luke 21:1-4. The Bible says:, “And He [Jesus] looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. 3 So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”
- God loves a cheerful giver.
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7: “But this I [Paul] say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
